How to do Emergency roof repair of flat roofs?

Introduction

A roof of a house, whether commercial or residential situated in either an urban or rural area is usually made up of baked clay, baked slate, corrugated zinc, corrugated lead, corrugated aluminum and corrugated copper. These materials are strong enough depending upon the layers of coating but they can be damaged by some natural calamities. This damage is often seen after a rainfall, thunderstorm or tornado. This damage comes in the form of a crack in the roof, showing some leakage.

This needs a professional fixation but in case of any kind of emergency, say, it happens during a festival, weekend or in time of despair (running low in finance), roofs can be fixed by people themselves following cost-effective procedures. Roofs have two types of surfaces- Flat roofs and elevated roofs. Flat roofs are made up of materials such as polyvinyl chloride, thermoplastic polyolefin and synthetic rubber such as EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber).

How can I fix my roof myself?

Fixing a roof yourself can be time-saving and cost-saving and can be a temporary procedure depending upon the severity of the damage. Here, the following procedures could be followed for fixing the flat type of roofs.

  1. Flat roof fixation by Tarp: This is generally done by using a plastic tarpaulin sheet or cover. This minimizes the cost of emergency roof repair. Depending upon the area of the damage, a tarpaulin sheet or cover, commonly called a Tarp is spread out evenly across the damage. One has to make that the sheet or cover is big enough to ensure that all of the damaged areas have been covered properly along with some additional area. After this, the sheet or cover is pulled tightly down to the roof and is smoothed out. All four edges along with some additional points are hammered with a nail. This ensures a quick placement of the sheet or cover over the affected area.
  2. Flat roof fixation by cosmetic/structural procedure: Materials such as clay and slate are placed over the leak. If your budget allows you more, cement can also be used. The damaged area can be covered with the above materials when they are wet. These materials can be dried up at a time of a few hours.

Conclusion

Flat roofs are easier to fix and commercial roof repair of the flat roofs can be done by people themselves. However, it is not a permanent solution as it is not done professionally.
